The Music of Chance has a very specially low budget look to it, much like my beloved Chuck and Buck, and that endeared it to me. Unfortunately it’s about gamblers and few things frustrate me as much as gambling addicts. I like to gamble too, sometimes— I love a scratcher, and I love Keno, and once I won $60 on a Dolly Parton slot machine—but people who end up building big walls because they owe too much money? Get a heroin addiction like a respectable person.

The Music of Chance does not feature Eric Stoltz but DOES feature another shockingly bad styling choice for the otherwise never-bad-looking-even-now Spader. What is this? And what was this accent? It sounded distinctly Bostonian, but again, I’m not reading the book it’s based on so I guess it’ll be a mystery forever.

The cast here is stacked as all get out. Mandy Patinkin, Charles Durning, Samantha Mathis!!!!, Chris Penn, Camp Nowhere‘s M. Emmet Walsh. It’s an aggressively fine movie but I don’t have too much to say about it.
